The Masons agreed to pay for the cost of the third floor, provided that they could use that floor for their meetings. Dewey agreed to finish the basement, provided he could have a long-term lease to use for his furniture and undertaking business. Their lease with the Town of Clayton was not renewed in 1993, but they were allowed to stay there until they united with another Lodge. With no elevator in the building, these elderly men found the stairs difficult to manage. Eventually, they joined the Mason’s Lodge in Depauville and stored their furniture at a Lodge in Chaumont.

End of an era and the start of another

The Clock Tower of the Town Hall was donated by the Civic Club in 1905 and a four-sided clock, which struck every half hour, was donated by the H. Also, in 1905, a bell was donated to the Village of Clayton by the late A. H. Vandergrift of Washington, D.C., who had a palatial summer home on Long Rock Island. The bell, operated by the clock mechanism, rang the hours for a great many years.

When the government offices were added to the bottom floors, it became not only a musical venue, but a community center. More than 100,000 people have signed up for the Young ROH scheme which allows 16 to 25-year-olds to purchase tickets at £30 for midweek performances. Friday Rush seats are also released each week, offering last-minute and reduced price tickets. Ticket prices range from £3 in the Linbury, £4 for main stage ballet programmes and £8 for operas, to £340 for those wanting the best seats in the house for Die Walküre. The Walt Disney Concert Hall was designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry. Despite being a well-accomplished architect at the time of design, Gehry found himself an unlikely candidate for the job when the Disney family was looking for the hall's designer.

With the Walt Disney Concert Hall being a project that demanded a high budget and an elegant style, Gehry did not seem like the right candidate for the job. The Royal Ballet will present the European premiere of Wayne McGregor’s MaddAddam, based on Margaret Atwood’s trilogy of novels (Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood and MaddAddam) with a specially commissioned score by Max Richter. The return of Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet marks its 60th anniversary; also 60 years old is John Cranko’s take on Pushkin’s Onegin which will be on the main stage only a few months after its operatic counterpart. New work will be presented by choreographers including Christopher Wheeldon, Joseph Toonga, Kyle Abraham and Crystal Pite.

“In a fragmented world where so much of people’s cultural life is mediated digitally we bring people together in one shared space to reflect on the bits of life that really matter, and we do so with unrivalled force. With not just our longstanding members but also the next generation of ballet and opera goers” said Beard. Victoria Baker has been involved in music since she started (and hated) piano lessons in kindergarten. Her tears in piano led to her love of violin and electric guitar, as well as musical theatre.

It was called a raked stage because it sloped toward the footlights, as did the scenery. The stage was built that way purposely, in order to give the audience the optimum view of the stage. Five sets of scenery were kept in the basement, where five dressing rooms were located.

Dick Munro, Bill Danforth, and Bill Munro are grandsons of William and Norma Danforth. During World War II, the clock was removed so the tower could be used as an observation tower. A walk around with a protective railing was built on each side of the tower. After the war, it was discovered someone had donated the gears, counterweights and other parts of the clock to the scrap drive as another patriotic gesture. However, the bell was preserved and is on display in the area of the Town of Clayton Offices, in the basement of the Opera House. The Opera House had a seating capacity of 750, and at the time, had the largest stage in Jefferson County.
